Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast “sidekick”.

How To Get Strong As A Bull, And Then Get Ripped

555 says @ 00:22:53
Do you think the Strong Lift 555 program is effective for someone trying to bulk up?

~ In my reply, I recommend “Starting Strength” by Mark Rippetoe, the book “Interventions” by Dan John, and my 9 Month Men's Muscle Building Program on TrainingPeaks.

How To Get Better Results From Cold Thermogenesis

Jenna says @ 00:32:16
Is it better to use all cold water (like an ice bath) or cycle between cold and hot water (like a contrast shower) to maximize the effects of cold thermogenesis? Is there a clear winner or is one better for recovery goals and one better for metabolic goals?

~ In my response to Jenna, I recommend the Ray Cronise episode inside the BenGreenfieldFitness phone app. I also recommend my Cold Thermogenesis How-To article.

What To Do About Excessive Sweating

Mike says @ 00:39:43
He's a 44-year-old who has worked out his whole life. In the last 10 years, he has started reacting differently to humidity – he sweats a lot. To the point of embarrassment. Should he shut off the air conditioning? Is there any way he can learn to deal with heat and humidity better?

~ In my reply, I mention an autoimmune protocol.

How Often Should You Poop?

JustWondering says @ 00:50:19
How many times should you poop in a day?

~ In my response, I mention the How To Poop The Right Way episode we did. I also recommend The Squatty Potty.

The best natural skin care strategies

Kelcey says @ 00:58:21
She buys skin care products from Hydron but they contain BHA. She emailed Hydron about it and there was some back and forth. In the end, because of her email, they are going to start some testing to see if they can get rid of the BHA in their products and use Rosamox instead. Is this better?

~ In my response, I mention the two BenGreenfieldFitness Inner Circle webinars: How To Make Your Own Sunscreen & Natural Skin Protection and How To Protect Your Skin By Avoiding Chemicals And Choosing The Right Products.

How To Get Rid of A Bone Spur Without Surgery

Bob says @ 01:09:23
He has a serious bone spur near his big toe. He knows surgery is inevitable but is hoping to learn why bone spurs happen and if there is a non-surgical treatment for them.

~ In my response, I recommend Phenocane and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy with an Earthpulse device.

"20 seconds cold 10 seconds hot x10" – sounds like a CT Tabata set :D

  2. Shahrul says:

I definitely agree with the stronglift 5×5 workout. I’ve been getting tremendous results applying them in my training.

  3. ffirestine says:

Just to let Brock know, I love the audio editing. I heard the Benny Hill music when he talked about England, and the "Poo-mergency" voiceover. I had to LOL at that one. Also, on a more serious note, I am considering the EarthPulse to help my wife with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, along with your other recovery recommendations.

    1. Thanks! I will let Brock know.

    Ben –

Thanks for the insight into PEMF. Could you please provide the link to the research article you mentioned on PEMF therapy virtually eliminating a spinal cord osteophyte in 6 months? I have a family member that could greatly benefit from this type of treatment if it works as advertised.

    Hi Ben,

You mention that you pooped every day even on the ketogenic diet. I'm surprised about that as many people report longer time between bowel movements on a ketogenic diet. Do you know if you did anything specific to counter this increased time? Some people say its because of dehydration and sodium deficiency, do you have a view on that? How much water and did you consume while on the ketogenic diet?

    1. I've never heard that. In fact, I have heard the opposite – a high fat diet is where the term "disaster pants" came from!

  6. kem says:

Sorry that you live in such wood burner poverty in the US. We have had clever wood burners for decades here (NZ). Everyone in our neighbourhood has one or more. One can’t even get an old dunger past the council installation consent. We’ve got two, and currently replacing the little kitchen wood burner with something more efficient.

If all the wood you burn is replanted, it’s carbon neutral. And you get a hell of a lot of good strength training felling, rounding and splitting.

  7. Chris says:

    Ben –

You mention here (and I’ve heard you mention it before) that fasted morning workouts should be really easy. ie easy cycling, brisk walking, or easy swimming. But what if you wanted to do an early morning cross-fit style session? Is there a safe way to do this fasted like taking amino acids?

    1. AAs can certainly help. As can having a snack before bed… but then you aren't really "fasting". I would just grab a quick snack before the workout and do your fast on another day of the week or at the other end of the day.

  8. Eric J. Gruber says:

Glad to hear Stronglifts 5×5 mentioned on the program. I've been following it for about five months now and have made great progress. I love the program because it allows me to get in and get out of the gym quickly, while building strength. Also, sets of five instead of say, 15, are much more manageable mentally. Great episode!

    1. Eric J. Gruber says:

After thinking about this more today, I realize I might need to switch my workout. I would like to continue burning fat, and perhaps the 5×5 program isn't meant to do that, as you mentioned on the podcast, Ben. Guess I'll figure out what to do next!
