Hey Ben, I have a question about vitamin D3. I believe you implied or even said that as long as blood is showing around 80 for Vitamin D that you're fine, but I wanted to make sure. My wife has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and with that, several methylation issues. Her worst two are Vitamin D and Folate. Her [naturopathic] doctor has had her on around 16,000IU of D3, four days per week, for around two years and her D levels are around 90-100 I think. He recently dropped her to 14,000IU four days per week but we haven't done a blood test yet to see the effect. Assuming her blood levels drop to 80-90, do you think that high of an amount is OK since her body is only using a normal person equivalent? Or would she be better off with a lower dose even if it causes a drop of D below 80 in her blood? Thanks for your thoughts!

    1. I'm not a doctor and I can't give out medical advice BUT there is definitely evidence to show increased risk of mortality once Vitamin D exceeds 80, and another spike once it exceeds 100, and this is even more risky if there is a lack of Vitamin K2 and magnesium (the Holy Trilogy is D/K/Magnesium). That gives you some info to act on, although I can't tell you to "stop" Vitamin D…

Thanks for the part about shift work – when I came across that it was exactly what I was after to recover from my own nightshift fatigue as a firefighter. You're the best!

Ben, I think what you may be looking for to impress Jessa on your next date is a Dance Belt.

I have a lot of trouble sleeping, and this was very helpful! One question: Couldn't we just take the curcumin in capsule form with our coffee? Wouldn't the release time and absorption be pretty close? If not, what's the differential in absorption time between the coffee goodness and the curcumin? Enjoying the taste of my coffee is a part of my mindful/relaxing morning routine, and I'm pretty attached to my coffee tasting delicious.

    1. I've tried both methods and, although I'm not quite sure of the physiological mechanism but suspect it is due to binding with the terpenoids in the coffee, stirring or blending the curcumin in seems to vastly enhance results.

Although I agree with some of what Ben says about Barre classes, I disagree in some areas. As a barre instructor, I make a considerable effort to use functional movements. We spend the majority of my class doing different kinds of squats and lunges, which I suppose varies from many barre instructors. At my studio we don't work from a script, so we are able to be creative with the movements we teach. My class consists of functional movements and intervals. People sweat and get their heart rate up using not only small but also large range of motion. All movements are also done in a neutral spine versus a tucked pelvis, which is also more functional. I agree that the strength you build definitely plateaus, however, the workout never becomes easy. This is a fantastic and low impact form of exercise that provides deep strength, tone, balance and body awareness. It's also a great workout for pregnant and post natal women. My clients comment about increased ease of labor and recovery of the pelvic floor from regular barre classes.
