How Runners Can Lose Muscle In A Healthy Way (And Calorie Cycling 101)

Des says: She's big fan of the show and she's learned so much its overwhelming.  She has a strange question. Over the winter she managed to increase her muscle mass a lot, but now it's running season and she's too heavy. She needs to lose some of it but it's mostly muscle. What's the safest way to go about losing added weight while maintaining the benefits of the bone density, better hemoglobin, etc. Do you have any tips? Thanks!

Natural Ways To Maximize Eye Health

Dave says: He's calling from Bloomington, Indiana. He's an active 29 year old and recently been diagnosed with Open-Angle Glaucoma. He takes a pressure regulating eye drop as recommend by his Ophthalmologist and he's also tweaked his diet to increase his intake of eye healthy food like sweet potato, carrot and dark leafy greens to help manage eye pressures. He's curious if you have any additional protocols that you recommend to combat the pressure of glaucoma specifically or promote better eye health in general? He loves the show and hopes to hear a response on the air.

How Females Can Lose Body Fat Fast

Heather says: She's calling from Michigan, she loves the show! She has a question regarding food. She's competing in her first body building competition in twenty weeks. She's doing the fitness division and the training is going really well. However, food has been a place of struggle. She frequently binges and its really uncontrollable and it feels primal. She was wondering if you have any advice, tips, supplements, things she can take to get it under control, so when she gets closer to competition she can get her body fat down to what it needs to be. There's two caveats, she's vegan, and she's been dealing with candida for five years. Any thoughts and tips are appreciated!

In my response, I recommend:

-Thyroid support in the form of a natural thyroid supplement like Thyrogold
-Progesterone support in the form of magnesium, vitamin C, L-arginine, Superessentials fish oil, chasteberry, DIM, and a full spectrum multi-vitamin
-DHEA support in the form of Thorne DHEA
John Kiefer's Carb Backloading Protocol
Candida Cleanse protocol

Still struggling with understanding a protocol to slim my muscular bulky thighs. I know this is possible but want to do this in a healthy way as I have dealt with hormonal issues in the past.

    Confused about the calorie cycling
2 days low 5 days high ? Would my Apple Watch give me a pretty accurate caloric intake based on movement?
    I’m 27 5’5 140-145 lbs goal to be 125-130. Fastest cardio 30-45 min a day?

  7. Thank you for this podcast. I have been a licensed Chiropractor since 1994. My practice focuses heavily on my passions – biomechanics and Nutrition – using our bodies efficiently to prevent injuries and prolong a healthy life and eating real, unprocessed food. I went to the same school as the doctor you interviewed and he was correct in stating that our curriculum was the same program taught at Harvard’s medical school. We studied years of biochemistry, biomechanics and cadaver dissection. Most of my professors themselves were medical doctors and it was a tough, competitive program that I was really glad I had chosen. After practicing for over twenty years, I am about to enter another certification program in Functional Nutrition so that I can better serve my patients and serve more people through consultations online and by phone. For me, this will be a continuation of the way I already practice as a truly Functional Medicine Wholistic doctor, that started with the deep and very tough education I earned in Chiropractic College. I’m very glad that you were able to clarify this with a doctor who is thoughtful, sensitive and intelligent. Thank you.

    1. You get more amino acids from "supplementation" with stuff like NatureAminos vs. collagen peptides, but you could do peptides as the "next best" option…

  8. Tori says:

Hey Ben- great podcast. You mentioned with extreme caloric deficit over time – the body slows metabolic rate. Is there a way to restore this when it occurs? Without “refeeds” and long dieting – thyroid issues developing – can an increased rate occur in order to achieve fat loss?

    1. Yep, as obvious as it may seem, eating lots of calories, lowering exercise, gaining body fat and relaxing/destressing/sleep can help a ton.

    2. Tori says:

So – even if body fat has already been gained to a Normal healthy level – exercise has been lowered but any add in calories adds weight… could this be related to adrenals? Would this be something you would be familiar with for a consultation?

      1. Hey Tori, yes, this is something I'd look into with a consult! You can book this by going to <a href="https://greenfieldfitnesssystems.com/ben” target=”_blank”>www.greenfieldfitnesssystems.com/ben and choosing 20 or 60 minutes and we'll get you scheduled to go into detail and figure out what's going on! Hope that helps and talk soon!

  9. MarkMcCoskey says:

It just so happens that I received my 3 bottle order of Thyro-Gold today. Looking forward to to recovering some energy, vitality and drive. Been recovering from extreme iron overload (ferritin 26,205), and all that it knocks off kilter (congestive heart failure, pre-diabetes and hypothyroid). Levothyroxine did nothing.

  10. Judy says:

    Awesome tips, like always!

Question regarding DHEA use in females – I’ve heard females under the age of 30 shouldn’t supplement with DHEA. What do you think? I’m a 26 year-old female considering adding this supplement to my regime.

    Thanks!

    1. In smaller amounts of 25-50mg/day I do *not* see an issue with it!

  11. Alisa P says:

Just a note of personal experience with the “Cool Fat Burner”. I’m a 56 year old female and was not having any weight issues until I tried the aforementioned product. I have hypothyroid and this hypothermia caused my body great stress, tanked my metabolism and I started gaining weight. I followed all instructions meticulously and tracked/weighed all food consumption. I returned the vest with an explanation within the warranty period. They completely blew me off, and kept the vest AND my money. I do NOT recommend them to anyone. I wrote them multiple times and no resolution.

    1. Eric CFB says:

There are several inaccuracies with your claims, Alisa.

Cold exposure literally cannot cause fat gain or a lowering of metabolism. In fact it causes the opposite — it causes an increase in metabolism and calorie burning, as established in all studies and experiments on the subject.

Same thing for thyroid levels. In animal models, cold exposure increases thyroid levels, as a secondary means to increase metabolism and heat generation. A recently concluded NIH study was done on humans, but the results have not yet been published. Worst case scenario, it may vary from person to person… but again, there is absolutely all evidence for cold exposure increasing thyroid output, and none for it lowering it. So at the very least, it would have no effect.

If you gained weight, it’s probably because you either ate more, and/or moved less. Even registered dieticians tend to underestimate how much they eat.
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12396160

And when people undergo caloric restriction or an energy deficit (in this case, due to cold thermogenesis), they tend to reduce NEAT if they’re not careful.
      http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/research-review/…

So if you gained weight, that’s why; you ate more, or moved around less, or changed some other behavior to negate the benefits of the Cool Fat Burner. Again, this is established in the science, and there is no debate or controversy on the subject:
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23470300

Finally in regards to our return policy, we’ve had a 110% return policy since day-one. We have had to amend that somewhat, excluding returns for things like ‘mistaken orders’ or ‘unwanted gifts’ or silly reasons like ‘I don’t like how it looks’ or ‘It’s too cold!’ We want people to give it an honest try in order to get the bonus refund.

In your case, I asked you several times via email for the tracking number to confirm you actually sent it, as I was on travel, wasn’t at the office, and they hadn’t seen it at that time. You never gave us that tracking number. (I would have awarded the refund 10 seconds later with just the tracking number, regardless of us having not received the physical return and taken the missing package up w/ the USPS).

Finally, everything we’ve mentioned here, we’ve more or less addressed via email with you already. How many times can we say the same things over and over?
