The last time I had Robb Wolf on my show, we talked about nicotine gum, alactic training, binaural beats, small-scale farming and a whole lot more.

This interview with Robb threatens to be no different, as we delve into his new book Wired to Eat: Turn Off Cravings, Rewire Your Appetite for Weight Loss, and Determine the Foods That Work for You.

The surprising truth is that we are genetically wired to eat more and move less, the exact opposite of the advice we are often given. Robb claims to have developed a more customized weight loss solution that works with your body, a solution based not on arbitrary restriction of foods but on what works for you. A former research biochemist, health expert, and bestselling author Robb Wolf, has designed an eating program, based on groundbreaking research, that will rewire your appetite for weight loss and help you determine the optimal foods for your diet and metabolism.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why Robb decided to include a discussion of your “brain on porn” in his new book, and how chili-cheese nachos are like a porn site…[9:10]

-The fascinating link between ketosis and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)…[14:50]

-How one could theoretically build massive amounts of muscle with the use of (surprise) Viagra…[25:00]

-The shocking study done in Israel that showed massive variations in blood sugar responses to everything from hummus to cookies to bananas…[26:30]

-How you can test your poop and microbiome to generate an individualized diet based on your predicted blood sugar responses…[35:55]

-Why hemoglobin A1C, which is what many doctors will test to see what your blood sugar levels have been at, may not actually be an entirely accurate marker of blood sugar history…[48:25]

-What fructosamine is and why Robb recommends you track it…[49:55 & 52:20]

-How to test whether or not a food is actually good for your blood glucose levels, and exactly which numbers to look for 2 hours after you eat…[56:00]

-The best foods, herbs, spices and supplements you could add into a meal that is high in sugar to lower your blood sugar response…[61:54]

-And much more!

    Ben and Robb, great discussion!

Do you ever come across folks with moderately high Fructosamine but normal HBA1c? Any idea what this may indicate?

  2. Lanny Taschuk says:

Is there an ideal optimal best solution for blood glucose monitor or are they all about the same in quality and readings?

    1. A 24 hour continuous monitor like a Dexcom G5 is "gold standard" but any of these Abbott ones from Amazon are fine: https://amzn.to/2scU2lz

  3. Paige says:

    Hi Ben and Robb,

You talk about the effects of different nutrients and macronutrients on blood sugar response and I’m curious as to if you think having addition fiber (like a tablespoon of psyllium husk powder) at the start, or with a higher carb meal would mitigate that blood sugar response?

    Thanks!

  4. Pascale says:

Both you and Robb were right and wrong on the Hummus and Tahini phonetics. Depending on what country you’re from it will be sounded differently.

  5. Monica M says:

‘Wired to eat’ has been on my ‘to read’ list but it definitely just moved up! Also currently eating Jackson’s Honest sea salt and vinegar chips….. ????

  6. Matthew Lee says:

    Hey Ben,

I enjoyed the podcast! You guys discussed some aspects that Rob hadn’t touched on in other recent podcasts. Can you put up the link/reference to the hummus and banana study?

    Thanks,

    Matthew

  7. Allie says:

FYI – The Mayo Clinic is currently doing a clinical trial with DayTwo called A Study to Provide Personally Tailored Dietary Suggestions Using Individual Microbiome and Glycemic Index Response

Here is the link to the website. http://www.mayo.edu/research/clinical-trials/cls-… You need to go to Rochester MN to be part of the study but for me it was less expensive than the paid DayTwo test.

I hope Ben can talk to the people at Mayo or be part of the study

  8. Alex says:

Exercise is very effective in the context of weight loose. Eat as much as you want but remember to loose the calorie

  9. Richy says:

    Really interesting, thanks guys.

Quick follow up on the HbA1C/red blood cell turnover discussion. My son has a pyrrole disorder which is causes problems with zinc and B6 binding in blood cell breakdown byproducts. Would a ketogenic/low carb approach be a useful treatment to extend the red cell lifetime and reduce the amount of circulating breakdown byproducts?

    Thanks guys!

  10. I can’t find the link to the porn website Robb mentioned! LOL!

This was a great episode. Thanks guys. Secretly, you have been mentoring me over the years. I finally met Ben here in Phoenix and one day I’m hoping to meet you too Robb.

      1. LOL! I was actually kidding ’cause he said pornhub :) Thank you though haha

  11. S Kurdi says:

It’s not khummus… It’s hummus.. the Israelis simply can’t say the Arabic hard ‘h’, which sounds like it comes from the bottom of the throat. If you go to, say, the west bank, Amman, Damascus, Beirut, or any other place in the Arab world and say khummus, they will look at you like you’re crazy (and immediately think you’re an Israeli).
