Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast “sidekick”.

How To Understand Your Genotype

Allie asks: Her brother has the ApoE 3,4 genotype and high cholesterol. This genotype indicates that he is more likely respond to dietary changes in fat. They say that he should be eating a low-fat diet but they don't explain what that means. Do you have any advice what kinds of fat he should eat/avoid OR if a low fat diet is actually good for that genotype.

In my response I recommend:
23andme genetic testing
The APO E Gene Diet book
-Sterling’s App at MTHFRsupport.com or Genetic Genie’s Methylation Analysis and Detox Profile.

Are Multivitamins A Waste of Money?

Jason asks: He read about the “Are multivitamins a waste of money?” article on CNN.com referencing a paper in the Annals of Internal Medicine which says that “using supplements and multivitamins to prevent chronic conditions is a waste of money”. What is your take on that?

Should You Use Orthotics?

Amy asks: She has just returned to running from some time off due to a foot injury. She hasn't been back long and she is already having foot issues again. Where would you recommend going to get some good advice and diagnostics done on her feet or running gait. She feels like her podiatrist is just a glorified orthotic salesman.

In my response I recommend:
Correct Toes

How To Rebuild Nerves

Katie asks: Her father was just released from hospital/rehab after 42 days from Guillain-Barré syndrome as a result of a flu shot. He is currently in a wheel chair and cannot walk. Do you know any supplements or foods that will help rebuild his nerves and speed his healing?

In my response I recommend:
The Flu and Flu Vaccines: What's Coming Through That Needle?
Autoimmune Paleo Diet
-Listening to podcast 235 in which I introduce nerve pain fixes and:
-A whole food antioxidant that includes vitamin B, D, E and wild plant derivatives, such as LifeShotz. High omega 3 fatty acids and GLA intake, including borage oil, Natural painkillers from something like phenocaneHigh magnesium intake, a zinc supplement, and glutathione.

How To Use Fermented Foods

Kelly asks: She listened to your podcast “Top 5 Reason Athletes Get Fat” and you recommend eating a variety of fermented foods. She makes her Kombucha and drinks it every day. Is that bad? Should she be seeking out different sources instead of getting all her bacteria from one place?

Substitutes For Foam Rolling

Hugo asks: He knows that you love the Rumble Roller but real foam rollers can be expensive. Is there any reason why he couldn't use a PVC pipe instead? Do you have any other suggestions of cheap, easy to find things that he could use for rolling?

In my response I recommend:
-Kelly Starrett's “Becoming A Supple Leopard”
Homemade foam roller
-Kettlebells, dumbbells, lacrosse balls, tennis balls, door frames, barbells, broomsticks, trees.

Hey, Ben! I started using correct toes not too long ago, and I have definitely felt my feet to be stronger and my developing bunion improved.

Regarding 23andme, did you have any concerns about your data? With our crazy health care system (plus issues with data security nowadays), who knows how this data could be used 'against' one in the future. Thoughts?

    1. I think the whole technology is in its infancy right now and anything we as a society can do to help collect more data and push the medium forward will only benefit us in the future. I'm willing to doff the tinfoil hat on this one.

    2 questions:
Re: the apoe call-in, what's wrong with including lean meat and keeping the healthy fats you recommended, rather than going full-out raw vegan?
Re: the A/D/K balance: You take Green Pastures fermented Cod Liver Oil, right? How much Vit-D would you supplement if you're also taking that? Same with the Vit-A, which, I think, is present in the CLO. And what benefit is there to supplementing with Vit-A in the form of mixed carotenes? Should we stick with the CLO plus some amount of organ meats?

    Thanks!

    1. Many people eat lean meat, but not the sources of A and D, such as fat, organ meats, sea food and especially cod liver oil. Our ancestors use to give the lean meat TO THE DOGS and just eat liver, brain, marrow, fats, etc. So you could eat lean meat but you'd definitely want to add fats too. CLO + organ meats is good idea, along with mixed carotenes.

  3. Ryan says:

Hey, I was just wondering what melatonin supplement you recommend. Thanks.

    1. I don’t recommend a particular brand, just use a melatonin sleep patch 30-60 minutes prior to bed.
