How I Use My Leftover Cacao Shells (Amazing Chocolate Smoothie Recipe)
You no doubt have heard about my habit of occasionally drinking cacao tea instead of coffee some mornings, or as a dopamine-rich afternoon pick-me-up (great for fasting too!). MiCacao is the brand I use, and it literally tastes like drinking a rich chocolate bar – but is completely calorie-free. It is a loose-leaf chocolate tea made from the shell of the cacao bean and is 100% cocoa-based. It is completely natural, preservative-free, without any artificial flavors or starches, and is also organic, gluten-free, vegan, and sugar-free. The ingredients are—drumroll, please… cacao nibs and cacao shells. I like to steep it in hot water with Omica Organics vanilla stevia, Ceylon cinnamon, and sea salt.
Problem is, I’ve felt guilty afterwards about just tossing the soaked shells. But I’ve found an amazing use for these shells: I’ve been soaking them in kefir for about 12 hours overnight in the fridge to soften them up even more, then using the soaked cacao shell “mush” as a base for smoothies. For example, into my Nutribullet, I add about a 1/4 cup of the cacao shell mush, then blend with a spoonful of almond butter, a bit of ice, kefir or coconut milk to desired texture, organic pumpkin mash, more cinnamon, and collagen peptides or protein powder, then top with unsweetened organic coconut flakes and a handful of cacao nibs. Interesting Movie About Smart Drugs I Recently Watched On A Plane
I recently watched an interesting documentary on the plane called “Smart Drugs” (this is my treat to myself: I watch pretty much zero television, but on a long haul flight treat myself with a movie or a documentary!).
The premise is “If popping a pill could make you smarter and increase your memory would you take it”? After all, around the world, doctors, students, and white-collar workers are taking cognitive enhancement pills to work harder and longer. This movie did a good job exploring the oft-confusing world of smart drugs and nootropics, and I found it pretty entertaining to watch an immersive journalist who knew next to nothing about this world take an often humorous deep dive into brain enhancement via supplementation. Abdominal anatomy lesson… I’ve always said that abs were made in the kitchen… Meaning the foods that you eat are going to have a bigger impact on your abs or your six pack or whatever you want to call it compared to all the crunches or torso twists in the world. What I mean by that is that if you monitor your glycemic variability… Which is the extent to which your blood sugar fluctuates during the day…And also your levels of inflammation, particularly by paying attention to parameters such as your heart rate variability and your HSCRP levels… Then you’re going to be 90% of the way to getting the type of fat composition you desire. That being said, before heading to the airport for my big LA book launch tour, I completely blasted myself with a quick workout during the 30 minutes I had available. And yes, this one involve a little bit of biohacking. Using a high frequency power plate vibration platform, I did 10 rounds of 1minute speed squats holding 20lb med ball, 1m Spider-Man push-ups (google em) and 1m back bridges.
