New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I'm Trying, Books I'm Reading, And More!

“Magic” Smoked & Fried Steak

This week, I tried my hand at…

…smoking and deep-fat frying a steak. Yes, yes, I know: deep-fat frying is right up there with high-heat grilling or heavy processing when it comes to potentially deleterious effects of meat, but this is an “every once in a while recipe,” and, as I point out in my book Boundless, if you “chase” high-heat oil food consumption with something to mop up a bit of the extra free radicals you’ll get from that meal, such as bone broth, dark polyphenols, antioxidants from herbs and spices, or even glycine and spirulina, it can help quite a bit to clean things up.

So for this recipe, I took a HUGE (as you can see!) 2.5lb grass-fed, grass-finished Tomahawk cut from Belcampo Meats (use code GREENFIELD20 to save 20% off your first order) and rubbed it down with Kion coffee grinds, rosemary, thyme, coarse salt, and cayenne.

I then smoked it at 165 on super-smoke mode on the Traeger Grill for 1 hour.

Next came the magic: I had a whole pile of beef suet and coconut oil leftover from last week’s “chicken confit” recipe, and I melted that down, along with my secret ingredient—wild blueberries, to make a blueberry-infused fat for frying the steak.

The rest is simple: I transferred the steak straight from the smoker, and, very carefully with some good kitchen tongs (of course this tactic only works with a Tomahawk because you can hold the bone, but in any other case, you’d need a frying basket), transferred it into the heated and melted oil, then gave it a 5-minute fry.

This smoked and fried beef was nothing short of amazing. And yes, I ate the entire 2.5lb steak myself…thank you very much.

I may have to write *another* cookbook soon. But in the meantime, you can grab my new one at BoundlessCookbook.com. How about you? Any favorite “weird” cooking methods you’ve combined with good success, or any drastic failures?

Instantly Turn Any Pair of Shoes, Sneakers, or Boots Into Earthing Footwear

If you listened to my earthing and grounding podcast with Clint Ober, then you already know about the powerful mitochondria and inflammation-reducing benefits of being outside barefoot, wearing earthing or grounding shoes or sandals, or using earthing and grounding deskmats and sleepmats.

But let’s just say you already have a suite of shoes that have rubber soles or other protection that completely limits your ability to stay grounded, or you don’t like the admittedly subpar style of many earthing and grounding shoes. Turns out you can turn *any* shoe into an earthed/grounded shoe with the addition of a simple strap. Clint Ober recently turned me onto “Erthe” straps by Earthling3, which I noticed when the world's #1 tennis player, Novak Djokovic, was sporting them on his tennis shoes in a recent match. I grabbed a pair and outfitted them to one of my own pairs of tennis shoes and…voila!

I was instantly earthed with the special conductive material in these straps. They are super easy to add to any shoe. You just peel off the adhesive and slap them on. Erthe straps have been shown to decrease lactic acid levels, creatine kinase levels, and inflammation while simultaneously increasing countermovement jump performance and recovery time.

This is a cool and easy hack for your existing wardrobe, and you can get them by clicking here.

::: Save Up To $200 On Hapbee :::

It might sound like science fiction, but there’s a way for you to get the cognitive benefits of caffeine, melatonin, and other supplements that change your state of mind—by tuning in to a radio signal.

Digital drugs are a relatively new biohacking tool, but the technology is already growing by leaps and bounds. Last week, I talked to Scott Donnell, the CEO of Hapbee, a company that calls itself “the Netflix of Feelings.” The technology behind Hapbee has taken an incredible journey to its current form: from submarine detection to cancer research, and now to a device that lets you choose your state of mind from a smartphone app. The field of “good EMFs” is exploding from niche biohacking to the mainstream.

With Hapbee, you get access to their growing library of signals to let you choose how you feel on demand. Select the Sleepy signal when you’re ready to hit the hay. Choose the Focus signal to help you tap into mental clarity and creativity. Or switch between Calm, Happy, Alert, or Relax as needed.

Look for an article from me next week in which I take a deep dive into the science behind the Hapbee. I think you'll dig it.

  1. Lajosch says:

    Hey Ben,

First: your hair looks amazing, I dont think you need anything for it. Or did you experience SARMs related effects on your hair?

Do you still recommend using SARMS and which one what would you recommend for explosive athletes? Would be nice to have an update as there is more clinical data emerging on this topic.

    1. feel free to send more data on clinical trials, but I haven't really been advocating, using or even researching SARMS for several years.
