How To Train Yourself To Breathe Properly While Working On Your Computer (Or Anywhere Else) Using Coherent Breathing

Lately, while working in my office, I've been playing a specially designed background bell and chime track that is precisely calibrated to a 5.5 second in and 5.5. second out tempo, which, if you listened to my podcast with James Nestor or if you've read up much on how to increase vagal nerve tone or HRV with specific breathwork tempos, you know is the ideal tempo for keeping your parasympathetic nervous system activated while increasing HRV.

I downloaded these audios after reading the book The New Science of Breath, which proposes a revolutionary theory of health based on autonomic nervous system balance via breathing. Eastern cultures have held breathing in high esteem for thousands of years; references to its importance are to be found in some of civilization's earliest writings. Yet even today, while modern biological and medical sciences have made great strides in exploring and understanding the details of the human organism, including respiration at the cellular level, beyond gas exchange, the larger biological function of breathing remains something of a mystery and is generally taken for granted.

The New Science of Breath introduces Coherent Breathing, which is based on the premise that, while at rest, the cardiopulmonary system (inclusive of autonomic nervous system aspects) resonates at a specific frequency—this frequency being essentially the same for all adults. When the breathing frequency is consciously aligned with this “reference rhythm” with appropriate depth, it results in optimal autonomic nervous system balance. Autonomic nervous system balance yields mental and physical comfort, a positive emotional outlook, enhanced health and well-being, and improved biometrics.

After reading the book and experimenting with the audio tracks, I realized that I tend to subconsciously “hold my breath” or do more shallow breathing while checking emails, writing, etc., and this background coherent breathing track I've been playing, along with the book, has changed all of that. Let’s talk Farmer’s Walks. I’m a huge fan of these ESPECIALLY for shoulder strength, shoulder definition, and overall shoulder stability. My kettlebell coach @coachjoedi often assigns me a variation of these called “Death By Carries”, in which I walk for as long as possible with two kettlebells held overhead, then when I can’t hold them overhead any longer, bring them down to a front-racked position on shoulders with elbows in, then walk and hold that as long as possible, then finally, when I can’t hold that any longer, shift to regular Farmer’s Walks with the kettlebells at the side – all the time breathing in through the nose and humming on the exhale to keep nitric oxide elevated and to maintain focus and relaxation under stress. This morning I did rounds of 2 minutes on the airdyne nasal breathing with 5 rounds of Death By Carries between each. Try this one out and let me know what you think! You’ll definitely notice a big increase in your shoulder health and the way your shoulders look if you do something like this 1 to 2 times a week. Anybody else out there a fan of farmer’s walks?

    Dear Ben!
    I found you on the internet healing from Brest cancer in February of this year…. and then found out I was in the 85 % high risk category so in honoring my Mother who had a radical mastectomy when I was 9 I decided I would have a double mastectomy and reconstruction!….I am healing as I write … and have to tell you how over the top magnificent Guy Dad scholar and character I have ever encountered…..plus your ability to be completely real in your research and presentation on your podcasts!!!… because I’m in Florida I started taking Bodyhealth products especially the Amino Acids which have helped me enormously.
