New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I'm Trying, Books I'm Reading, And More!

Incredibly Interesting Book On A Crazy “Physical Culture Icon” I'm Reading Right Now

Mr. America: How Muscular Millionaire Bernarr Macfadden Transformed the Nation Through Sex, Salad, and the Ultimate Starvation Diet.

During two feverish decades between the world wars, Bernarr Macfadden did more to educate the world about healthy eating, alternative medicine, regular sexual activity, and exercise than anyone in history. His disciples included Upton Sinclair and Charles Atlas; among his employees were Walter Winchell, Ed Sullivan, and Eleanor Roosevelt. He launched the worst newspaper in U.S. history, founded a whole-grain utopian community in the New Jersey suburbs, trained fascist cadets for Mussolini, and came within a hair's breadth of being elected senator from Florida running on a physical fitness platform. Yet today few have heard of this larger-than-life entrepreneur who changed American society. In Mr. America Mark Adams illuminates Macfadden's captivating, ambitious, and unparalleled life.

Special Announcements:

::: Save 10% On The Blue Blockers I Use For More Restorative, Deep Sleep  :::

Something you'll rarely catch me wearing: sunglasses. Something you'll frequently catch me wearing: blue light blocking glasses. See, sunglasses block sunlight from reaching your optic nerve, resulting in decreased production of protective melanin, and thus a higher risk of a carcinogenic and uncomfortable sunburn.

Blue blockers, on the other hand, block harmful blue light from modern LED, fluorescent lights, and screens—all of which can disrupt your circadian rhythm, causing increased production of stress hormones like cortisol and the suppression of melatonin at night. This leads to poor sleep and mitochondrial function, slowed metabolism, weight gain, increased rate of chronic disease, low energy, and decreased overall health.

I've tried many blue blockers throughout the years, but the brand I've landed on for functionality (and style) is Ra Optics. You can get your own pair of Ra Optics blue blockers here and save 10% when you use code BEN10 at checkout.

What is Ketosis? If there’s a single diet trend that has taken the world by storm over the past 5 years, it would have to be Keto. Everyone and their mother is trying the keto diet, but what exactly is it? This week, I’m going to give you a breakdown of the keto diet, whether it’s right for you, and some of my top tips for optimizing your keto experience. So first, let’s answer a very important question: What is ketosis? Ketosis is a metabolic state where most of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis where blood glucose provides most of the energy. Ketosis is characterized by serum blood concentrations of ketone bodies over 0.5 millimolar with low and stable levels of insulin and blood glucose. However, with ketone supplementation (as you’ll learn about later this week) ketosis can actually be induced even when there are high levels of blood glucose. Keto-adaptation, AKA “becoming a fat burning machine”, occurs when you have shifted your metabolism to relying on fat-based sources, instead of glucose (sugar) sources, as your primary source of fuel. Your body increases fat oxidation, and breaks down fats into ketones to be used as the primary energy source. So why change everything if you’re feeling good on the diet you’re currently on? Currently, research supports the use of ketones, ketosis or both for the following benefits: -Weight loss -Blood sugar balance and enhanced insulin sensitivity -Increase satiety, and decreased food cravings -Improved energy levels, oxygen capacity, motor performance & athletic performance -Enhanced blood flow through vasodilation -Migraine treatment -Mood stabilization in bipolar disorder (type II) -Stroke prevention; cardiovascular disease; metabolic syndrome management; improved cholesterol levels -Inflammation management -Endurance enhancement If these benefits sound good to you, then the keto diet may be exactly what you need. But there may be some drawbacks that you haven’t necessarily heard before that I will break down in detail over the coming days! What keto questions do you have?
