New Ketosis Book I’m Enjoying
My friend and science writer Travis Christofferson just finished his book, Ketones, The Fourth Fuel: Warburg to Krebs to Veech, the 250 Year Journey to Find the Fountain of Youth. In it, he weaves a fascinating narrative of humanity's quest to understand how our bodies produce energy—transporting you on a scientific expedition from the past to the present, across early modern Europe to modern laboratories spanning the globe.
Ketones, The Fourth Fuel follows Nobel Prize-winning scientists from the 19th and 20th centuries as they map the pathways and cycles that comprise human metabolism. I’m getting a new and lasting appreciation for the silent chemical motion that keeps us alive and healthy. Ultimately, the narrative arrives at a remarkable discovery that rewrites everything we thought we knew about metabolism—with profound therapeutic consequences.
Coming back to the present, Christofferson reminds us that Americans are sicker than they have ever been. Heart disease, cancer, dementia, obesity, and type 2 diabetes are rapidly becoming the norm. Yet we are presented with a revelation: the realization that we all have a potent, and easy-to-access hybrid metabolism that generates a different fuel, the fourth fuel, that “supercharges” our metabolism in a way that slows aging and by-passes the metabolic dysfunction that leads to the multitude of diseases that plague modern society. I have a confession: I poop once per day. One smooth, glorious morning movement, and then I'm done. And I don't really think about number 2 at all until the next day. It's quite convenient, especially compared to my old days of hitting the head a handful of times during the day, straining, always feeling like I had something “still inside.” How do I keep my digestive tract running so smoothly, you ask? 1. @kion Coffee Enema: Don’t laugh. Once a week, I do a coffee enema once per week because I carry a higher genetic risk for colon cancer. This practice has numerous potential benefits including mechanical cleansing of the colon, increased lymphatic drainage, and improving liver function. For you skeptics, I have a full article detailing all of the benefits of a coffee enema that you can find by clicking the link in my bio. 2. Squatty Potty: The @squattypotty is a toilet stool that puts you in the correct, ancestral position for fast and easy elimination, namely by ensuring you don’t have any colorectal “kinks” while defecating.
