New Family Dinner Game We Are Enjoying

I’m a big believer in my friend Naval Ravikant’s idea that the five most important skills a child (or adult) can learn to set them up for success in just about any arena of life are: reading, writing, arithmetic, persuasion (rhetoric), and computer programming (logic). Naval unpacks this idea in detail on this podcast.

As a result, I’ve been implementing in my twin 12-year-old boys’ unschooling curriculum a focus on each of these five skills. Initially, persuasion/rhetoric was a tough nut to crack until I discovered The Rhetoric Game. Available as both a phone app and a physical board game, this game (designed by two professional speakers) allows each player to “step onto the stage” and take turns delivering a series of short, entertaining speeches. It’s been a ton of fun to play at the dinner table and my boys, my wife, and I are all learning to become better “impromptu” speakers and having a ton of fun in the process.

Being able to speak well in public is extremely important. You may have great ideas, but if you cannot convey those ideas to others in a manner that is engaging, persuasive, concise, and memorable, then much of your potential will not be realized. This is a fun and effective way to get you and your family up on your feet and sharpening your rhetorical skills.
