New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I’m Trying, Books I’m Reading, And More!
Supplement – Black Cumin Seed Oil: A gut test I recently performed on myself and discovered that…drumroll please…I have a touch of candida in my digestive tract. While most people know I am a huge fan of oregano as an immune and gut tonic, and I certainly started into a 3x/day protocol of this oregano, I also decided to give black cumin seed oil a go, as the studies on this spicy, savory oil are pretty staggering and go far beyond candida and include prevention of cancer, diabetes, obesity, hair loss, skin disorders and infections like MRSA . Click here to get the same black cumin seed I got, which is some of the most organic and concentrated stuff you’ll find. Good lil’ oil to have around the pantry in my opinion.
Food – Garlic: As if the candida thing weren’t enough, I also came down with the flu – which meant I was sick for the first time in seven years. Fortunately, I’ve written before about how to drop the nuclear bomb on the cold and flu and in this case, I heeded my own advice and went nuts on garlic. I’m personally careful about excessive garlic clove consumption as it is highly fermentable in the gut, so I went with high dose garlic in capsule form instead. How much garlic should you take? Brace yourself: about 9,000 mg of high-allicin garlic once and, if you can stomach it, up to twice daily. For this, I’m a huge fan of “Allimax“, one of the few highly absorbable forms of high-dose garlic that exists. A word of warning: this potent form of high-dose garlic can often cause stomach and esophagus burning if you consume on an empty stomach or don’t eat food afterwards, and you will reek of a pretty strong sulfur odor soon after taking it, but it will absolutely saturate your body with garlic’s well-researched virus-killing effects. If you are brave enough, you can also include at a separate time of day about 3,600 mg a day of aged garlic extract – which is different than high-allicin garlic. There are unique immune-boosting compounds in aged garlic that work a bit differently than the compounds found in high-allicin garlic. For aged garlic, I am a fan of the brand “Kyolic“.
Gear – X3Bar: On my recent trip to Florida, I shoved this entire bar, along with all the included elastic bands, into my bag for a portable gym. Based on the concept of variable resistance training, it allows me to generate hundreds of pounds of force under extremely tight tension. Designed by medical engineer John Jaquish (who I’ll be releasing a podcast with soon), it’s about the closest you can get to putting an entire squat rack in your travel bag, and still being able to slip something into the overhead compartment on the airplane. Not sure whether to thank or hate John for the ensuing sweaty sufferfest in my hotel room, but what can I say? This portable device packs a punch.
