New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I'm Trying, Books I'm Reading, And More!

– My Latest Video About Finding Your Purpose In Life

All the discoveries you'll find in this week's roundup are based on some deep, meaningful introspection I've had of late, most of which I elucidated in this quick 15-minute bonus podcast I recently released. Based on this, I've decided to begin delivering to you occasional, inspirational videos that highlight some of my biggest thoughts and takeaways from the week – particularly based on finding more purpose, fulfillment, joy, and meaning in life.

Here is this week's video:

– Book That I Am Finding Highly Inspirational For Direction In Life: The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life

Everybody tells you to live for a cause larger than yourself, but how exactly do you do it? This book explores exactly what it takes to lead a meaningful life in a self-centered world. It describes how every so often, you meet people who radiate joy, who seem to know why they were put on this earth, who glow with a kind of inner light.

Life, for these people, has often followed what we might think of as a two-mountain shape. They get out of school, they start a career, and they begin climbing the mountain they thought they were meant to climb. Their goals on this first mountain are the ones our culture endorses: to be a success, to make your mark, to experience personal happiness.

But when they get to the top of that mountain, something happens. They look around and find the view . . . unsatisfying. They realize: This wasn’t my mountain after all. There’s another, bigger mountain out there that is actually my mountain. And so they embark on a new journey.

On The Second Mountain, life moves from self-centered to other-centered. They want the things that are truly worth wanting, not the things other people tell them to want. They embrace a life of interdependence, not independence. They surrender to a life of commitment.

In short, this book is meant to help us all lead more meaningful lives. But it’s also a provocative social commentary. We live in a society, Brooks argues, that celebrates freedom, that tells us to be true to ourselves, at the expense of surrendering to a cause, rooting ourselves in a neighborhood, binding ourselves to others by social solidarity and love. We have taken individualism to the extreme—and in the process we have torn the social fabric in a thousand different ways. The path to repair is through making deeper commitments. The book shows you what can happen when we put commitment-making at the center of our lives.

This one will rock your world. Get it here.

– Three Podcast Episodes You MUST Listen To

Hand-in-hand with the video and book above, I highly, highly recommend you listen to the three interviews that my friend Rich Roll conducted with another friend of mine: Dr. Zach Bush. The latest was absolutely mind-blowing when it comes to finding purpose in life, but all three are must-listens:

Most recent episode: “Let Go Of Your Story” (Definitely listen to this one by yourself, on a long hike in nature or when you can totally focus without interruption.)

The other two episodes: “The Science & Spirituality of Human & Planetary Transformation” and “Glyphosate & Healing The Gut.

Once you listen, let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Featured Product: Kion Bar

One of my favorite things to grab when I'm traveling, running out the door for a long hike or adventure, or when I'm just hankerin' for a delicious chocolatey snack, is the Kion Bar.

This bar is something I formulated specifically for active individuals who need a clean, real-food source of energy on the go. It's hypoallergenic and guilt-free, and jam-packed with a unique blend of ingredients that support energy without excess carbohydrates or artificial ingredients. Chia seeds, almonds, coconut, and cacao nibs also give it an amazing crunch and texture that's much more satisfying to eat than the gooey mash that makes up your average energy bar.

And if you're looking for a more “indulgent” way to eat these things, try them with a piping hot cup of coffee – or my favorite – crumbled on top of some Oatmeal Cookie Halo Top ice cream. Bon appetit!

Check out the Kion Bar and use code BGF10 for 10% off.

  1. Robert says:

    World best athlete(?)

Without outside stimuli, you cannot check for agility (Ability to move, think & understand quickly/easily). plus a test of power (strength x speed) & durability (Work capacity x ability to absorb damage/hormesis) is needed. If you wanted to find out who are the best athlete(s) in the world. You would need to create a parcource in a battlefield & see who wins/survives. Preferably a 1500m or 5km course that tests:
    *manipulative skills
    -lifting
    -carrying
    -throwing/catching
    *combative
    -striking
    -grappling
    *locomotive
    -walking
    -running
    -balancing
    -jumping
    -crawling
    -climbing
    -swimming

P.S. best athlete for a day or a weekend is way different that best athlete for an extended season or a decade. Way too many variables. Dan John’s quadrant II athlete paradigm may help answer the question.
