New Discoveries Of The Week: Cool New Things I’m Trying, Books I’m Reading, And More!
– Book That Has Gotten Me Checking Twitter Far Less
Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport: I’ve (ironically) been digesting the audio version of this book from Audible. In this book, the bestselling author of another favorite book of mine (Deep Work) introduces a philosophy for technology use that has already improved countless lives. Digital minimalists are all around us. They’re the calm, happy people who can hold long conversations without furtive glances at their phones. They can get lost in a good book, a woodworking project, or a leisurely morning run. They can have fun with friends and family without the obsessive urge to document the experience. They stay informed about the news of the day but don’t feel overwhelmed by it. They don’t experience “fear of missing out” because they already know which activities provide them meaning and satisfaction. Now, Newport gives us a name for this quiet movement and makes a persuasive case for its urgency in our tech-saturated world.
Common sense tips, like turning off notifications, or occasional rituals like observing a digital sabbath, don’t go far enough in helping us take back control of our technological lives, and attempts to unplug completely are complicated by the demands of family, friends, and work. What we need instead is a thoughtful method to decide what tools to use, for what purposes, and under what conditions. Drawing on a diverse array of real-life examples, from Amish farmers to harried parents to Silicon Valley programmers, Newport identifies the common practices of digital minimalists and the ideas that underpin them. He shows how digital minimalists are rethinking their relationship to social media, rediscovering the pleasures of the offline world, and reconnecting with their inner selves through regular periods of solitude.
He then shares strategies for integrating these practices into your life, starting with a thirty-day “digital declutter” process that has already helped thousands feel less overwhelmed and more in control. Click here to read or listen to it now (but prepare to be convicted about your social media use).

This week, I gave a healthy food presentation for the fourth and fifth grade class at my kids’ school! The title of my talk was “5 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was A Fifth Grader”. I handed out a corresponding document (link in bio) along with this phyonutrient checklist (link in bio) then dressed up as… …Porky the Pizza! And presented the following: #1: You Are What You Eat -The #1 thing not to eat because it’s what makes up your body: vegetable oil (show and tell and let them separate good oils from not, e.g. grass-fed butter vs. Crisco, margarine and "I can’t believe it’s not butter", avocado oil and olive oil vs vegetable oil, etc.). I had volunteers come up and separate the good oils/fats from the not-so-good. #2: Eat the Rainbow – I went shopping for reds, oranges, yellows, purples, greens, etc. then split the attendees into boys vs. girls & we came up together with a rainbow of foods based on the phytonutrient doc. #3: Not Everybody Is The Same – Right diet not for everybody I brought a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, and a block of tofu, then explained what these do to some people’s bodies and explain elimination diet to figure out what’s best “for your tummy”. #4: Not All Health Food Is Good For You – Just because something is healthy doesn’t mean you can digest it. I passed around a jar of sprouted quinoa vs. regular bag of quinoa to explain how to make foods more digestible and also brought a bag of regular sugar and compared it to more nutrient-dense options like raw honey, stevia and blackstrap molasses. I used these examples to demonstrate nutrient density vs. digestibility. #5: Healthy Food Can Be Delicious – Healthy food can actually taste good. During the Q&A, I brought some of Jessa’s chocolate macaroons & pumpkin seed brittle to taste wonderful desserts that are also healthy for you. I then opened it up for Q&A & handed out @gsgrobyn’s book “Adventures Of Junk Food Dude” (link in bio) to the top questions. Feel free to use any of these resources if you want to do your own presentation at your children’s school… …and leave any of your other ideas below for healthy kids' eating, school lunches, etc.
