It is partially due to his involvement in this study that he has developed such an interest in the world of cellular inflammation in the first place. After this podcast was done, Dr. Schiestl and others published a paper on Lactobacillus johnsonii 456:
“A novel probiotic, Lactobacillus johnsonii 456, resists acid and can persist in the human gut beyond the initial ingestion period,” Michael Davoren et al. Including Robert H. Schiestl, Gut Microbes. 2019;10(4):458-480. doi: 10.1080/19490976.2018.1547612.

A lot of the commentary on fasting seems to ignore the idea of exercising at night, when it may work better in one’s schedule. I workout every Wed. 5:30-7:30 pm. I’m always trying to figure out the best post-workout routine at for that night but all the info. I get discounts anything else I hear. For some reason, I find that after this workout, is the easiest time for me to do a long fast. I can to go bed without eating and wake-up not hungry. The workout is both plyometrics and resistance training. If I want to achieve the most gain for my effort, what would be your recommendation?

  3. Hey Ben, First off, I am so grateful for what you do. This podcast was great, seeing the add’s with Thomas on YouTube seemed a bit cheesy, and was quick to get away from it, I am happy to get a different perspective of him here.
I did a Viome test, was pretty surprised by the results, but I have been and having some issues for a while now. Im ok with it telling me to comprise 50% of my daily value of calories from carbs, well the good kind. Also saying I am on the high range of inflammatory activity. My question is, I have a 61.3% activity of Bacteroides fragilis str. 3-F-2 #6 ….. healthy range is around 15%, My question is, what do you think is the best way to reduce this, or reduce this faster? Just following the recommendations (I am) and seeing how things go? or Fasting???

Too bad its made with sunflower oil, it seemed like such a great product.

  5. Paul says:

Is there a discount code for the Curcumin Gold?

  6. Neil Paterson says:

    Hi Ben

    Fantastic Podcast as always.

Any chance of a discount code/link for the Uk purathrive website?

  7. Megan says:

How much of the Curcumin Gold should you take each day to maximize anti-inflammatory responses in your body? Thanks for the great information!

  8. Scott says:

Does the Curcumin Gold need to be refrigerated since it’s a liquid?

    1. No, just store in a cool, dry place.

    2. michael rosen says:

is this the brand Thomas recommends (Curcumin Gold)?

      1. michael rosen says:

yes it is! Please disregard, thanks!

    3. Hi Scott,

It shouldn’t be allowed to get too warm, but if your home is at room temperature you can leave it out. I leave mine out on my desk, personally. If you’re in a warmer climate and you’re concerned it can certainly go in the fridge.

  9. D says:

Great podcast! Based on how y’all discussed that curcumin is poorly absorbed except in a very specific preparation, would you say there is any benefit / point at all to cooking with regular turmeric?

    1. Yes, just be sure to blend it with black pepper and any oil, like coconut oil!

  10. Kate Murphy says:

The circumin gold contains “natural flavors”. This is a bit concerning… can you tell me what those are??

    1. PuraTHRIVE says:

      Hi Kate,

The Curcumin Gold is flavored with natural citrus oil and the ginger oil of course. That’s it!

    2. Laura from PuraTHRIVE says:

      Hi Kate,

The natural flavors are just orange/citrus oils and ginger oil. Nothing harmful here, we guarantee it!

  11. Jennifer Ortiz says:

Hi Ben, thanks for the interview. If I’m looking to increase supplementation of turmeric/ginger using the actual root not a capsule, what is the best way to do this? Amounts that would be beneficial, how to prepare ie cook it with food/juice it etc,, and is there anything to take with it besides black pepper to increase absorption of the actual root?

    1. I would blend it with black pepper and any oil, like coconut oil!

      1. Craig C says:

Speaking of coconut oil and since you are with Laird at XPT, I assume his turmeric creamer be liposomal due to the coconut oil, but would it also have the micelle element?

        1. From the folks at Laird Superfood: "While it is very likely that the coating of the ingredients by the introduction of the oil results in a liposomal effect, we do not claim to employ specific liposome science in the processing. By the same token, we do not claim our products are also processed via specific micellization technology. Hope this helps."

  12. Martina says:

  13. Brendon says:

Ben, I thought this was a great episode. I was curious about something you guys touched on regarding fasting and glucose. I’ll do intermittent fasting a few days a week and normally break the fast with a smoothie that contains blueberries or about a cup of another fruit.

Do you think breaking the fast with a smoothie that contains fruit will cause the harmful interactions you guys discuss, or negate the benefits of the fast / restricted time feeding?

  14. Siim says:

    Hey,

In the podcast you guys mention, that high iron levels in the body are not good, what’s the best solution that one can do, to lower the iron/ferritin levels in the body?

  15. Dan says:

Hey guys that was a great podcast, really fascinating. I was wondering what if any are the negative side effects of taking things like L-Citrulline, L-Arginine, Acetyl-L-Carnitine and or Beta-Alanine, thing usaully found in a typical preworkout supplement, can they cause imbalances or inflamation that may in the long term hinder me?

  16. Dave Fellows says:

I little concerned at a bunch of the ingredients in the Purathrive Curcumin:

Glycerin, Potassium Bicarbonate, Sucrose – why on earth are these needed/desired? Particularly the nasty preservative and sucrose…

    1. Dave Fellows says:

Further to this; to me, a nutraceutical manufacturer loses all credibility when 1) they optimize taste over health and 2) use something like sucrose as their sweentener of choice.

This is a real shame as the product sounds extremely compelling otherwise. Also quite surprising as Thomas clearly seems knows what he’s talking about when it comes to health and inflamation…

Ben, maybe you could seek clarification on this and/or advise them on a better approach to “finishing” their product.

      1. Dave Fellows says:

OK, sorry for another post on this but I just looked at the nutritional info label. 4g of carbs per tbsp serving! WTF?!

        Dumbfounded…

I was really excited about this product after listening to the podcast but there’s just no way I can put something with these ingredients in my mouth.

    2. There was a teeny amount of sucrose in the original production run. It was purely for processing purposes and PuraThrive removed sucrose on the
2nd run. So it is no longer in the current run of the formula.

    3. Laura from PuraTHRIVE says:

      Hi Dave,

The glycerin is used as an emulsifier. Glycerin may have a calorie and be a carbohydrate, however, it has a very low glycemic index, is safe for diabetics, and, is a precursor for phospholipids. Whereas sugars are not a precursor for lipids or fatty acids at all. Keep in mind fatty acids and lipids help provide energy from fatty acid metabolism and lipids being a carrier for such. In fact, Sugar, unlike Glycerin, does not Glycate proteins in blood. Glycated protein in blood can impair blood regulated sugar in diabetics. Sugar can glycate hemoglobin as well which is not a good thing. Glycerin does not glycate hemoglobin in blood. Glycerin is very different carbohydrate than sugar and is even safe for diabetics.

As for the preservative.. I think you are thinking of potassium sorbate. Potassium bicarbonate is not a preservative and is used to adjust PH in many natural processes, it’s a natural mineral, like baking soda.

Sucrose was in the first run of the formula, but was removed after that, so anything currently in production no longer contains sucrose and the labels should reflect that very soon. It was used for processing purposes but the company has opted for more natural options.

      I hope you’re having a great day!

  17. bonnie says:

The Curcumin Gold has as its first ingredient Glycerin. I was under the impression listening to Nadine Artemis that glycerine of all kinds was not healthy as a topical skin care ingredient because it for example temporarily plumped and lubricated then ultimately has the opposite effects where it shrivels up skin. How ca this be good internally?

    1. It is in extremely extremely small amounts.

      1. Dave Fellows says:

Hang on, it’s the first ingredient… Based on the 4g of carbs per tbsp serving, I’d say there’s a *lot* more than “extremely small amounts”

        1. Laura from PuraTHRIVE says:

          Hi Dave,

The carbs actually come from the glycerin.

          Take care!

          Laura

  18. John Torrillo says:

Hey where is the transcript for this podcast? I can’t seem to find it!

    Thanks for everything

    1. It's up now! Transcripts can take a few days to populate.

  19. Future Arnold says:

Ben, don’t take this the wrong way but you are a smart guy who sounds like a dumb guy. No offense. You are obviously intelligent but you throw terms around like popcorn without any preface or explanation. Makes you sound you are just regurgitating info as opposed to really explaining it.

I had a lot of trouble following this podcast as well as others. You and guest constantly jump around and throw out terms and supplements/nutrients without properly detailing how the average joe listener should use them. Could you please properly summarize a daily/weekly menu for someone to ingest these essential ingredients to reduce inflammation?

I have no sense of what a typical diet consists of. Could you please provide one for the listeners?

  20. Zak Parpia says:

    Hey Ben,

I’m on the Organifi website but the code BEN isn’t working.

    Zak

    1. Can you try again and let me know if it's working? It's working fine on my end.

  21. Jared says:

Do any products he mentions even exist? Lyposomal mycellular curcumin bound to lactoferrin in a supplement. Where?

    Algal oil? Where?

    1. Yeah, it's that Purathrive stuff that is in the shownote resources above…

    2. Gary says:

Hey, the mentioned it at the end. “Curcumin Gold”

    3. Ryan says:

And it can be yours for only $100/month!! What a deal!!

I think I’ll stick with the poorly absorbed, regular turmeric for 1/10th the price.

  22. Paul says:

Ben – just letting you know you were masterful in this particular podcast. You methodically pressed him to identify exactly what he does to reduce inflammation – fasting, curcumin, EPA/dha, etc. And you recapped each item after he talked through it. Most of us listen to podcasts on the go and aren’t writing down the key takeaways. Please keep doing this recapping, bullet point style so interview. There are others (*cough* Bulletproof) who tell the same five personal health anecdotes every podcast and you never get actual takeaways. This podcast in particular was so helpful — thanks!

  23. Amy Sanders says:

Both of your wisdom and knowledge taught me a lot in this pod cast!! Outstanding information for someone who has RA an autoimmune disease that I’m am trying to heal not cure through an holistic approach with no avail at this time but I won’t give up! I truly hope Thomas that you and your team with be successful in a new advancement towards finding a way to make that 456 bacteria available to all! Thank you so much Been for all your help and products to guide me on my journey as well. Hope to hear much more from you 2.

  24. David says:

    Ben or Thomas,

BHB and glucose for athletic performance – is there a supplement on the market? How do you take this?

    Thanks,

    D

    1. John Shoffner says:

I use KetoCaNa + Glycofuse. Amounts depend on demand. Typically 1/2-1 scoop each for each hour in your water bottle, sip during event or chug a 8oz of the mix 30-45min before.

      1. David says:

What do you train for John?

  25. Anthony J Llabres says:

Creatine = Increased DHT and that can = Hairloss for many men!!
