Alice says: She is a 2:50 marathoner. She runs high mileage (80 miles a week) and her coach likes to give her swim workouts 3 times a week. She is burnt out on swimming (and it is winter and cold) and would rather do some hot yoga instead. Can she do hot yoga 3 times a week (intense, 1hr Flow classes) instead of the swims? Which would be more beneficial?

How To Reverse Damage Caused By Antidepressants

Brian says: He has been on antidepressants for the last 10 years. For the last 5 years he was on heavy doses of Lexapro and Effexor. It worked well, did its job and he has been off for a couple years but he feels like his mental acuity is down and his sleep patterns are a wreck. Is there a way to put together a program to detox or if there are doctors who can handle this? Is this actually a thing?

Dr. Daniel Kalish is a real expert when it comes to neurotransmitter repletion therapy, and I’d highly recommend you visit the Kalish Institute website, read the Kalish Method book or speak with a licensed Kalish practitioner prior to experimenting too much with this stuff.  Another very good resource to learn more about neurotransmitter repletion is NeuroAssist.com.

Open Water Swimming 101

Stephen says: He would like to get into more open water swimming. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina where it doesn't get too cold – water temp into the low 50s. Could you talk a little about hypothermia in connection with exercise? At what point should he be using a wetsuit? What style of wetsuit? Also do you have any wetsuit brand recommendations?

    Ben,

    I’m an avid reader of your blog, tune in to all of your podcasts and routinely find great value in the content you put out. You are definitely my go-to source for all things fitness, nutrition and living a healthy life. And it’s exactly for that reason that I was a bit disappointed to hear your recent podcast that covered, in part, how to reverse the damage caused by anti-depressant medications. Not that I necessarily took issue with your recommendations for those that are no longer on these types of medications, but rather that you seemed to allude to the fact that you question the efficacy of anti-depressants in general.

    We are without a doubt an over-medicated society and anti-depressant medications are certainly a large part of that equation. But that is a vastly different issue than whether or not they help the people that truly need them. As not only the spouse of a psychologist, but someone who has had a close friend affected by mental illness, I can speak firsthand regarding the good that these medications do when prescribed correctly. They are certainly life-changing, and in many cases, literally life-saving. Is that to say that there is not merit to Dr. Jackson’s concerns regarding psychiatric medications or that Irving Kirsch’s claims of a possible placebo effect are invalid? Of course not. But you simply cannot ignore the countless cases where these medications have made undeniable differences in people’s lives. For one such example, I suggest you take a look at this article by Maura Kelly, ‘Hey, Let's Not Get Carried Away: Anti-Depressants Really Do Help People’ (http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/06/hey-lets-not-get-carried-away-anti-depressants-really-do-help-people/257976/), where she talks about her struggle with depression and her attempts to “cure herself” using alternative means.

    The bottom line here is that this is a very complex issue with a lot of unanswered questions. But to even suggest that these medications are of little or no value is not only irresponsible, but down-right dangerous to those that rely on them; especially when you consider how resistant to medication those with mental illness are to begin with. If I’ve misinterpreted your position, then I suspect others may have as well, so I’d simply ask that consider clarifying it. If I haven’t, then I hope that despite your personal feelings you’ll at least reconsider the unintended affect your comments might have on those struggling with mental illness and temper them in the future. Thanks.

    You mentioned while discussing Krill versus Fish Oil that the EXOS fish oil is in triglyceride form, but it is in fact in Ethyl Ester form.

    1. Sorry, I need to clarify. The Liquid is a TG, the capsules are an EE.
