Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Brock Skywalker Armstrong, the Podcast Sidekick and Audio Ninja.

Can Your Heart Rate Variability Be Too High?

Michael says: Is it possible to have too much HRV? He checks his HRV every morning and regularly scores over the maximum value of 100. He even scored 107 once. He is nowhere near a professional athlete but he trains a lot. Does he have some weird medical condition or is he just good at taking the test?

In my response, I recommend:
NatureBeat

Vegan Bone Broth and Vegan Bulletproof Coffee

Ellie says: Is there a vegan version of bone broth? Not just veggie stock but something with the benefits of bone broth. Also is there a vegan version of Bulletproof Coffee? Can she add some Earth Balance and get the same benefits that you get? Probably not… but she thought she'd ask.

In my response, I recommend:
Great Lakes Gelatin
L-Glutamine

Natural Remedies For Menstrual Cramps

Jasmine says: She gets very bad menstrual cramps that leave in her in bed and she seriously can't get up and go through her day. She doesn't want to take over the counter meds but what else can she take? She also gets incredible fatigue where she actually has to go and lay down on the floor by her standing desk (thanks to you for the standing desk idea) because fatigue has just hit her. Is that normal? What could be wrong that she gets so fatigued during her period?  Do you have any suggestions of what to do about fatigue and tiredness due to menstruation?

Do Tesla Cars Have High EMF?

Maria says: She drives for work and is considering purchasing a Tesla car but is concerned about the EMFs. She also has two small children and doesn't want to expose them if it might be dangerous. Do you think the pros outweigh the cons in terms of never having to buy gas again? Or is the risk of harm too much?

In my response, I recommend:
A gauss meter

How To Choose The Sex Of Your Baby

Paul says: He and his wife have just had a baby girl and while she is an angel and he loves her very much there is a lot of estrogen in the house now. If he and his wife were going to have another baby, have you seen any research or do you know of any way to tip the balance toward having a baby boy next time? He would like to do all those crazy things you can do with a boy… 'cause playing with dolls just isn't cutting it.

I question how consumer reports got their numbers for measuring EMF's. I am currently in the market for a new car and I've taken my Cornet meter and tested the mG in about a dozen cars. Every car I've tested gets up to around 20 mG at the foot of the driver and various mG around the rest of the car. My Dad's toyota prius gets 30 mG in the back seat and varies up front depending on acceleration etc. I found it to be much higher than any other car I've tested.

    Hi Ben,

In the podcast you talk about excluding Nut milks like almond and coconut from Bulletproof coffee. I was looking at the Native Forest Organic classic I get and it shows 0g sugar and 2g carbs per 1/3 cup. I usually like to put about a tablespoon of this in my BP Coffee just for some flavor. Would you still exclude this since it still has some carbohydrates or were you mainly talking about the nut milks that use added sugars (Pacific, silk, etc.)?

    1. It’s not just the actual carbs/sugar that are the issue but the protein that converts to carbs as well. Mix that with a ton of fat and you’ve got a cholesterol time bomb. Check out this podcast for more info – https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/2013/10/258-h…

ah, I understand now. I'll be saving that coconut milk for other things!

        Thanks for the awesome info

So I have a Tesla AND a Lapka gauss meter. I decided to take some readings on my way to work today. As Ben said, Tesla must have done something to shield the passengers from EMFs because the entire trip (at speeds from 0 to 80mph) the mG's were VERY low (average 0.02). I took readings in the front and back seat and held the sensor up to the computer screen. It would spike when I drove under electric wires and interestingly it would go up slightly when some "regular" cars were next to me. My theory is that those cars are producing electricity from the alternator and through the spark plug cables to generate spark in the engine.

    1. Very cool! Thanks for letting us know.

      1. Sam says:

So a conventional car created a stronger end than an electric car? So everyone that has ever risen in a “regular” car is being exposed?

        1. Risen or ridden – yes! ;)

  4. javimei says:

Speaking of bone broth: is it normal that it gives me a bit of a headache? I make my own at home, everything organic. I try to take it at night because if I take it in the morning it gives me a bit of an uncomfortable feeling in my head. Is it because of the glutamate content?

    1. I would look into what is happening in your gut. That could be a sign of something being "off" down there – https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/2014/01/step-…
