samtsirhc asks via Twitter: @bengreenfield I am training for 1/2 marathon & have varicose veins in calves. Dr said no running. What do u say? Can I treat them?

Ken asks:

1) I read and listened to one of your podcasts about the wonders of sodium bicarbonate. Is it safe to take baking soda daily to maintain good PH levels?; 2) One of the products that u recommend is Somnidren. I often have trouble sleeping and was excited that u were recommending a sleep aid product.  The only review I found on it is very cautious and I was hoping u could take a look and respond.  Also can u tell me the history of millennium sports who makes the product?  Are they new to the supplement game? It looks like u are endorsed by them?  http://hghtruths.com/hgh-product-reviews/somnidren-gh-an-hgh-supplement-review; 3)I have a friend who recently ran the boston and received a free sample of http://www.generationucan.com/ and now swears by it.   The company claims it uses fat as the primary source of energy which leads to great weight loss etc etc.  Runner Meb Keflezighi endorses the product.   I was wondering if u had any thoughts on this product??  2 good to be true?

In my response to Ken, I reference Somnidren GH from http://www.millenniumsport.net .

Christian asks: I am a surgeon and new triathlete in Florida.  I have two questions. 1.  To increase strength instead of muscle mass should I use high weight, low reps, high sets or is there a better method? 2.  What about using biofeedback training to lower heart rate and core body temp while training or racing to improve performance?

Patti asks: What are your thoughts of doing bikram yoga occasionally while training for IM? I have done it in the past and thought i might start again 1x per week for flexibility but I have a friend that says NO during training.

Anonymous asks: Are there any advantages or disadvantages to ending a shower after a workout with cold water? Would it have a negative effect on your metabolism?

officialdillo asks via Twitter @bengreenfield: What are your best tips for my first open water swim, how to deal with the wetsuit and other competitors?!

Mike asks: I was wondering how much protein I should be trying to eat each day if I'm training for an endurance event such as a half marathon or a century ride? Every time I walk into a gnc some weight lifter tells me that it should be at one gram of protein for every pound of body weight. That seems like too much to me. I weigh 165 lbs and am currently training at 2300 to 3300 calories per day (depending on my activity level).

Gabe asks: I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  It has helped to answer many health question that have baffled me for a few years.  I've reviewed podcasts with Roby Mitchell on this topic; I've gone to his website, but he isn't accepting new patients.  My local Dr is just subscribing the typical synthroid (synthetic T4).  Any thoughts on what you would do from here?

mike1shot @bengreenfield Whats your take on the power breath iron man plus? I don't have asthma, but someone that does might help them.

In my response to Mike, I give a link to Power Breathing devices.

Ben asks: What advice can you give someone returning to running after a lumbar disc bulge or herniation.  Have you come across any information on whether or not running increases your risk of disc or low back related issues.  How about running and long term issues such as arthritis.

Mike asks: I'm a triathlete in my second year of triathlon training.  I've just completed my first 70.3 and I'm hoping to do a full next year.  I'm 5'10 and currently weigh 178 pounds.  I've been measured by the local university Exercise Phys lab at 8.1% body fat.  I'm self coached.  Three years ago I weighed over 400 pounds, and I've lost over 220 pounds eating right and exercising. My leg strength seems to be a big limiter.  My legs always give out before my lungs do.  I have great cardio fitness, with a VO2max of around 66 and a resting HR of 35.  However, my bike FTP is only around 235, which gives me a power to weight ratio of 2.9 W/Kg.   I've been trying to address this by doing intervals at 90-100% of FTP for 10 to 20 minutes 1 to 2 times a week.  It helps, but I'm

wondering if there is more I could be doing as the improvement is very slow going.  I've only gained about 15W on my FTP since January.

In my response to Mike, I mention my triathlon coaching programs at Pacific Elite Fitness.

Kim asks: I have been taking a magnesium supplement called “Peter Gillham’s Natural Vitality”.  It is in a powder form that dissolves in water.  The ingredient list is:  Ionic magnesium citrate (blend of citric acid and magnesium carbonate), organic raspberry and lemon flavors, and organic stevia.   I really do feel calmer and I sleep much better when I take it.  The problem is, I have an ulcer and it really aggravates my ulcer.  It even causes cramping and pain in my stomach right under my sternum.  Can you recommend any other types of calcium that won’t upset an ulcer? A second question:  What can I do for calf cramps while swimming?  I have been swimming approx. 1200 meters 3 times a week for 1 year and just recently started experiencing cramps.  I also have been running anywhere from 5-10 miles 4 days a week for about 6 months.  I used to alternate run and swim days and I just recently combined them so I run (first) and swim on the same day twice a week.  I drink a lot of water so I don’t think I am dehydrated.

In my response to Kim, I mention Ancient Minerals Topical Magnesium.

Listener Jeff has a call in question about spin classes.

Listener Doug has a call in question about low back exercises and too much mucus generation during exercise.

  1. Gayle says:

Do you think the Power Breathing device could help someone with sleep apnea?

    1. *possible*, but it's tough to say. It's not indicated for apnea per say, but if your apnea is lung tissue elasticity related or inspiratory muscle related it might help.
