Listen on:

Dr. Aubrey De Grey (pictured above) is a British researcher on anti-aging.

He claims he has drawn a roadmap to defeat biological aging, and provocatively proposes that the first human beings who will live to 1,000 years old have already been born.

In today's podcast, I interview Dr. De Grey, and we discuss his seven “reasons” for aging and what you can do about it. You'll learn:

-Why aging may not actually be inevitable…

-7 strategies for increasing longevity…

-Which enzymes keep your body from building up junk…

-Cutting-edge strategies to keep you actually feeling good when you live long…

-And much more!

If you want to read more, De Grey expounds upon the following 7 principles and Delivery Systems he is developing:

1. Extracellular Junk
2. Death-Resistant Cells
3. Extracellular Crosslinks
4. Intracellular Aggregates
5. Mitochondrial Mutations
6. Nuclear Mutations
7. Cell Loss and Atrophy

  1. BRIAN C HAYES says:

I find Dr. Aubrey De Grey take a lots of things to be ultra conservative and very much from a classic established existing scientific vein of thought. I support him in his lifelong work but I find this title which gets bounded about a lot as he is the world expert on anti-aging questionable.

  2. Faris Rahman Khan says:

I am involved in researching ageing from a very different standpoint than Dr De Grey’s. Research into the religious practices of Tibetan monks and Hindu ”Sahdus” who practice deep meditation as a part of their daily worship, shows that meditation significantly slows down their ageing process. Some western scientists who are familiar with this phenomenon ascribe this both to the simple and regulated life as well as the reduction from stress that the practice of meditation induces in its practitioners. Dr Robert Keith Wallace was the first western scientist to acknowledge the anti ageing effects of meditation which he published in the International Journal of Neurosciences. My studies show that if one combines regular meditation with periodic fasting (fasting also enhances the depth of the trance state) and eating fresh and simple, nutrient-rich foods, can help us remain healthy, active and young, far beyond our years.

Hey Ben, how do I find the podcast # for this show so I can find it in itunes? I want to download it from there, not here. Thanks! Can’t wait to listen.

    1. The show numbers only come with the Q&A. It was written back in 2013 so maybe try searching by keyword?

I just found this blog post and I love it! I'm very interested and fascinated by the idea of de-aging and how to live much, MUCH longer than what people expect. My reason is that life is too short and I need more time to accomplish more in my life. I recently found out about the 2045 Immortality Project…pretty cool. http://2045.com/

I can’t seem to load the podcast. Is it working?

  6. natmelchiorre says:

Listeners of this podcast might be interested to know Dr. de Grey just donated $13M of his own money to SENS. http://nextbigfuture.com/2013/07/aubrey-de-grey-d…

    1. That's pretty dang cool!

  7. Ammae86 says:

How about Tim Ferriss' recommendation of donating blood?

Also, isn't autophagy induced by IF or protein cycling going to help with the intracellular junk or is that a different junk?

    1. Yes, those are two good recommendations also!

After 30 min. of listening to this show on my Finis, I realized that I was just swimming in some unorganized pattern and not following my prescribed swim set. Wow! it is amazing how the most intelligent minds often fail to grasp the simplicities of life as exampified by the island where people forget to die. I myself, often geek too much over biohacking when in reality it can go back to the old adage of “The Simple Things” done right. Thanks Ben for clarifying that at the end of the podcast of which I almost didn’t listen to but kept hoping you would bring out “The One Pearl.”

    1. If there were "one pearl" I'd be a billionaire. ;)

  9. Turrican14 says:

I really enjoyed the interview but why is this article called "7 Natural Anti-Aging Strategies That Will Stop Your Body From Getting Prematurely Old And Worn-Down"? It's more than a little misleading. Dr. De Grey espoused exactly 0 strategies and was very clear in stating that there aren't any that would apply to everyone. The only strategy here would be to help spread the word about his research and try to make it a more widely recognised topic.

    1. Actually if you follow those 7 links that are included, I think his strategies are outlined a little better than he even outlined them on the show…

  10. ptfitness says:

I'm sorry, did he say on the podcast that sugar was an essential nutrient?
I just don't believe that to be true.

    1. kk_84 says:

A lot of talk on popular health blogs these days about ketogenic diets and the less sugar you burn for energy the longer or healthier you live. I'm curious as to how much a low carb high fat diet contributes to better aging and if Dr Aubrey has looked into that at all.

    2. Turrican14 says:

Is there any particular reason why you don't believe that?

  11. michaeljframpton says:

What about alkalinity? Any thoughts Ben?

    1. I think alkalinity is important (note that for example on the island of Ikeria they're not eating huge hunks of meat a day, but just moderate amounts) but I also think people overestimate the whole "acid-alkaline" effect of foods. Chris Kresser recently had a good article on this. If you eat healthy, real, preferably local food and avoid toxins, your body will maintain a decent pH on it's own.

  12. Thanks Ben. This is hands down the most useful podcast to date. Love to see more like this one.

  13. John Carraway says:

A lot of echo or feedback from your mic around 46:20.

    1. yes, unfortunately I couldn't fix that!

  14. Albert83BCN says:

I think the link to the podcast is not working :)

    1. Should be fixed…
