If you're like me, you might wake up in the morning and drink a glass of water, take a shower, eat food that has been cooked in water, perhaps go for a swim later in the day, and then drink more water.

Or maybe you wake up, have a glass of water, exercise at the gym and use the water fountain, shower in the locker room, and drink a bottle of water on your way home.

Or perhaps you travel, drink a cup water on the airplane, take a bath at your hotel, and perhaps visit the beach sometime to dip your toes into a river, lake or ocean.

Regardless of who you are, you're probably drinking water and cleaning yourself with water every day.

So it's important to ask: is all water the same?

Or does the type of water you drink and use actually matter?

In other words, could some water help you, and other water hurt you?

Now before you go running for the hills expecting me to sell you some overpriced water filter or try to get you to join a  super-special, multilevel marketing “magical “water club, allow me to clarify:

The purpose of this post is not to sell you fancy water. It's just to let you listen in to my phone call with a University of Washington professor, in which I ask him all the dumb questions I wanted to know about water.

So in today's audio episode, I interview Dr. Gerald Pollack, an expert researcher in the area of water and what it means to your health. Dr. Pollack is a professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington, and has discovered a ground-breaking theory of water.

During our discussion, you'll learn the answer to the question”Is All Water The Same”, and also learn:

-Why water is absolutely central to cell biology…

-Why water is rarely discussed when describing muscle physiology and contraction…

-How water inside an organ affects the health of that organ or the functioning of the proteins within it…

-Why it is that the molecules, such as the proteins, within our body can't be viewed as a molecule by themselves, but must be viewed as the molecule plus the water…

-Why Dr. Pollack wrote a book called Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life, and why he's releasing a groudbreaking book update from his website soon…

Here is a good video presentation from Dr. Pollack as well:

If you enjoyed this episode, you should also tune into our other water episodes:

-Earlier this year, in an interview with Dr. David Getoff, entitled “How To Reduce The Risk From Swimming in Chlorinated Pools and Drinking Chlorinated Water.” (and we also discuss water filters in that episode).

-Before that, we had a podcast that asked: Are You Getting Scammed By Alkaline Water, Ionized Water, Magnetic Water, Oxygenated Water or Structured Water?

  1. Samuel Colosimo says:

Hi Ben, prior to purchasing my water filter, I am wondering if I’m better off drinking tap water or plastic bottled spring water? I’m leaning towards the conclusion that tap water is better than paying for plastic bottled spring water.
ps. Any input on whether a Berkey or Zazen is the way to go or any other water filter would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

  2. Aja Barto says:

Ben, curious to know what a general price range for a whole house water filtration system would typically run? That with a reverse osmosis, re-structuring and re-alkalizing filter for under sink drinking water?

    1. Hey Aja, I would start by having a listen to this and then let me know if you have any questions: https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/2016/10/361-12-f…

  3. I didn't see this study BUT the idea that using a less-adulterated, more absorption-friendly version of water could help the body's primary filter simply makes good sense. Here's an good article on the EZ water: http://blog.imva.info/medicine/secrets-life

  4. Glenn Gow says:

Ben, I have a friend who has kidney disease. I recall a mention of a study using EZ water that helped some patients. I'd like to point my friend to that info … can you help?

  5. Jeff Roegge says:

I recently purchased an Alimtox Alcaline Water Pod after hearing that bottled water is basically stripping all of the good minerals from the water we drink. Any thoughts on this and have you heard of the Alimtox canister before? http://www.alimtox.com/nanometerengcup.html

    1. That one is infrared combined with negative ion. I've seen that both of those may structure/detox water, but I've never actually tried that unit. Let me know how you like it!

  6. Lisa C. says:

Dr. Pollack uses slides in this talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd614bK3WZc&fe…

It was a little easier to follow with the visual aids. Thanks, Ben!

  7. Kelly says:

    Ben:
I purchased a Kangen Water (ionic) filter for my kitchen. What are your thoughts on drinking the alkaline based water? I am concerned that it could change the Ph level of my stomach and disrupt the breakdown of proteins and nutrients for the body. Any thought would be great.
    Kelly

    1. Not a chance that water would come close to affecting the hydrochloric acid in your stomach unless you were literally drinking keg fulls of the stuff! The advantage of alkaline water (and Kangen is a good brand) is that you will experience faster hydration, and better absorption. It's not going to significantly affect pH of your stomach, though. Possibly bloodstream, however.

      1. Kelly says:

Thanks Ben. I love the shows

  8. Dave says:

Water is fascinating! for more info on water structure, take a look at www.dancingwithwater.com also there is good book by that title.

  9. Terry says:

I am still trying to figure out what your guest was talking about.

    1. Terry, what was confusing?
