My guest on today's podcast, Zach Bush, MD, is one of the few triple board certified physicians in the country, with expertise in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Hospice/Palliative care. He was introduced to me by former podcast guest Dr. Joseph Mercola, and he is an extremely, extremely intelligent dude, especially when it comes to optimizing gut health using some pretty cutting edge strategies.

In 2012, Dr. Bush discovered a family of carbon-based redox molecules made by bacteria, and he and his research team have subsequently demonstrated that this cellular communication network functions as an antidote to the chemical “glyphosate”, and many other dietary, chemical, and pharmaceutical toxins that disrupt your body's natural defense systems.

Dr. Bush points to his own kids as the driving force behind his passion for change. He is fiercely motivated by a desire to have them experience a much brighter and healthier future. His education efforts provide a grassroots foundation from which we can launch change in our legislative decisions, ultimately up-shifting consumer behavior to bring about radical change in the mega industries of big farming, big pharma, and Western Medicine at large.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why Dr. Bush stayed in school for 17 years (and what it means to be a “triple certified” board physician)…[10:00]

-The discovery in soil that Dr. Bush made in 2012, and what he was looking for exactly when he found it…[11:10]

-How bacteria, in the right conditions, can “talk” to each other in the same way that your mitochondria do…[18:00 ]

-The method Dr. Bush used to turn carbon-based redox molecules into a drinkable liquid…[26:55 & 29:45]

How something called “lignite” can assist with mitochondrial health and longevity…[34:40]

-Why the best probiotic strains still contain only 24 of the 20,000-30,00 different kinds of bacteria in your gut…[37:20]

How glyphosate wreaks havoc on the tight junctions in your gut, and why it's impossible to escape it in water, air, dirt and food…[45:20]

-Why gluten can cause some of the same damaging issues as glyphosate, and why it wasn't until the 1980's that folks started to develop more gluten intolerances…[51:30]

-Why it's not enough to just eat “dirty plants” or fermented foods when it comes to equipping your gut to heal from glyphosate exposure…[59:25]

-And much more!

This is what I’ve been waiting for a scientist to come up with! This is awesome. I’m wondering if this product would help with heavy metals in the brain from vaccines as well? It seems there is nothing that can be done about Roundup being sprayed in the US and it looks like there will be mandatory toxic vaccines in the US as well. If the good guys can come up with the antidotes for these things, we have a fighting chance.

    1. So I placed and order…so sold was I on this idea….so excited that I missed the 15% discount….in fact the link went straight to the site with no option for discount…so I guess my question would be BEN, if you even affliliate yourself with this product or you actually still sell it since it was not restore.com/ben…please answer and let me know if I have wasted 160 bucks…so I can cancel if need be.

  4. Peter says:

    Thanks for the interesting podcast.

If the gut turns over every 72 hours as described in the podcast, wouldn’t abstaining form ingesting glyphosate for this amount of time help heal the gut?

If we can’t afford to continually buy Restore, are there lasting benefits for a few months of use or do the benefits exist only while actively ingesting the product.

  5. Adriana says:

BEN15 is still not working. Is it too late?

    1. We are working on it.. keep checking back.

    Hi Ben, or Restore Team,

Would you say that if an individual was given anti-biotics by the doctors due to some viral infection in the intestines, that it would be beneficial to supplement with Restore vs common probiotic’s?

  8. Joe says:

Really interesting guest. Thank you Ben.

Before I try Restore, but I am concerned about adverse reactions/consequences — have any longer term studies have been done. Obviously, too young of a product for human studies, but has the company analyzed the impact on many generations of mice, which can be done in a relatively short period of time?

(consumption of excess protein might seem to help me now, but probably wouldn’t be beneficial (and may even be harmful) in the long run).

  9. Lizeta says:

All studies that have been done on this are funded by the supplement company itself. I cannot find any other published scientific studies! İf I’m mistaken please correct me and provide me links but I’m not sure how good it is to sing the praises of something that has no evidence and could potentially be risky to take.

İf there are any ongoing studies on this please let me know! I suffer with an autoimmune disorder.

Holy smoke, this podcast had me on the edge of my seat. It really ties in a lot of question i had about gut health and how to maximize your gut-biome. I am so excited this product has been to try this after battling food allergies caused by leaky gut. Thanks for having Dr Bush on. I can always could on your podcast for some juicy info.

  11. Dennis says:

Since this relates to the gut area, do you or Dr. Bush have any strategies for avoiding diverticulitis and for re-populating the gut bacteria after receiving antibiotic treatments for it?

    1. Carrie says:

If I understood the podcast correctly, Dr Bush is saying that your gut bacteria will naturally return to a more balanced state when the gut lining (tight junctions) are functioning properly. You can help this process by interacting with nature — hiking, gardening, visiting the ocean, etc. — where you will literally *breath in* and ingest diverse Earth bacteria, which can now survive in your healthier gut tissue. You then maintain this improved gut biome by taking Restore indefinitely.

I’ve been taking it for a week now and I do feel better. If Dr Bush is correct, this will be one of the most important medical discoveries ever. Kudos to Dr Bush and to Ben for bringing us this info! :)

Its phenomenal to see horses respond to pre and post glyphosphate exposure.

You can easily demonstrate which organs and systems even a little glyphosphate will inflame and necome reactive.

Ive demonstrated this at expos where the audience thoroughly “gets it” even from 200 feet away.

Its another example of equine teaching humans!

  14. Bob Brubaker says:

Sadly glyphosphate is used in Europe! It’s everywhere. Two runners in a tiny village developed a rare cancer – they used to run together. It’s awful

  18. Wl704 says:

Great guest and podcast. I really enjoyed the depth covered, causality and impacts covered. Amazingly complex and interconnected systems very well explained. Nice job.

Makes me wonder about the broader effects of gly throughout the rest of the food chain as well including livestock and even wild game.

  19. Carrie says:

Loved this podcast, wow! Ben you are doing a great job of bringing us really cutting edge information!

I checked out the website and will try the product, however I want to point out that Dr Bush is advocating taking shots of Restore (1 ounce?) up to seven times per day, presumably forever, since he says the gut turns over every 72 hours, and so therefore needs to be newly protected all the time. That means that if this product works, customers will have to be buying large amounts of it, forever, which will be a pricey proposition. (Thus the website name “Restore4Life?”)

That said, I’m excited to give it a try and I really appreciate the fascinating interview! :)

  20. James says:

Can you explain the evidence to support the long term supplementation of your restore product – long term studies? You said it contains species from millions of years ago. Is there any danger to a species which hasn’t been exposed to these organisms ? Can it be used by 10 year old children?

    1. Marko says:

I don’t think there is any long term studies, its pretty new thing, that was my concern too before i bought it. There is no species in it its just that redux carbon based molecule that is extracted from lignite layer in desert where they digging. There is no species there ( it is not probiotic) what it does its just fixes your gut wall tight junctions by fixing zonulin function and pretty much heals your leaky gut and create environment for your microbiome to finally start communicating and shifting towards balanced one. Bu honestly if your gut is fine I would just wait to see more researching on this product, why would you risk if you really don’t have to.

  21. Billy O says:

Ben – first time listener today. Fascinating podcast, thank you and Dr Bush for the excellent information. We are planning to order some Restore.

Separate question though – you mentioned your home water filtration system. Could you please elaborate on your setup? Or perhaps link to a ‘cast where you have discussed it? We have recently begun using a Berkey counter-top gravity filter and are very pleased with the results. However, if we could start with even cleaner water coming from the tap, that would obviously be a huge improvement. Thank you

  22. Allison says:

I thought that this podcast was extremely illuminating! There are just so many parallels between soil health and gut health. I appreciated the analogy of monocropping the gut because it just cemented the parallel connection further in my mind. And I giggled at the story of your soil licking, globe trotting friend. Pretty brilliant!

The podcast also got me thinking about how ultimately Monsanto will be shooting their profits in the foot so to speak. Subsidized crops, primarily grains will need to be avoided by a diseased population in order to regain health. If market demand goes down farmers will not need their product. Really poor business strategy in my opinion, LOL.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the ability to hold a negative charge and improved communication among cells could do for the electrical system of the heart….?

  27. Sam Getta says:

Restore liquid is twice as much as the nasal spray. Is the liquid twice as effective? Are you supposed to do both of them together? Can you refill the spray with the liquid? Would using Flonase cause a problem or diminish the effectiveness of Restore nose spray? Thank you

    1. Hello Sam,

We created Restore Nasal specifially to deliver the same Restore Formula to the sinus mucosal mebranes and microbiome. The endothelial layer of the gut actually begins in the sinus membranes. Strengthening the tight juctions of these membranes may assist the specific biome of the sinuses to find a higher state of balance. Each breath of air, like each sip of water, or bite of food, can carry glyphosate, allergens, and other insults for the immune system. Supporting healthy nasal and gut environments simultaneously with the nasal and oral routes is our most succesful combination. The formula is the same, and the bottle we currently use can be refilled, though you will see that repeated filling leads to decrease fine mist function of the nasal spray apparatus. Although there are no interactions with Flonase, we suggest a minumum of 30 minutes between the application of Restore and other Sinus sprays.

      Thank you,

      The Restore Team

  28. Daniel Gates says:

    Ben.
Is anyone trying this on their soil. I’m thinking about dumping a bottle in my garden.

What creates the redox molecules? I feel like that is what I wont to populate my soil with.

P.S. I bring up your podcast so much that anytime a health topic comes up my wife says what does Ben Greenfield say about …

    1. Hi Daniel,

It is a great question. In my experience, plants do very will with a diluted spray or a shot in the pot for houseplants. Redox molecules by definition must be able to oxidize (accept an electron) or reduce (donate an electrion). Terrayhydrite contains carbon rings with multiple hydroxyl groups attached, and these groups can participate in redox signaling.

      Best Regards,

      The Restore Team

  29. Marko says:

Four years ago (I was 25) I got some virus that created inflammation in my gut( I didn’t know that back than) my doctor didn’t know what really is so he prescribed me antibiotics to take for a week, I didn’t feel better after taking them so he prescribed me again but to take them for a month. That just made me feel even worse. After that he prescribed me PPIs because I started getting bad acid re-flux. But I was not getting better, was just making me worse. Long story short, they messed up my gut completely and took me couple of years to get back on track. I was playing lots with probiotics in past years but they never seem to work that well because they will just shift balance towards certain strains. I would take HFM probiotics (this is just an example I was trying other brands too) and I will feel great( like will getting muscle mass like crazy and my gut will feel great) but I would get skin issues like eczema or hives, than i would took Aling which is just bifidus infantis, skin issues will go away, my skin would look amazing, but i would dramatically loose weight and get stomach issues. So i figure it out its really hard to restore balance using probiotics because I dont know what is the balance that works best with my microbiome and my immune system. Last summer i came across of the restore for life and decided to try because I already try everything. So I start using it one table spoon a day in between meals in September last year. My experience was pretty dramatic after 3 days of using it, i gut horrible diarrhea but after that initial bad reaction, my bowel movement gut pretty much perfect, and my gut start feeling really good, and acid reflux was gone. Than on 4th day I start getting insomnia, like I would go to bed and my brain was still wired. Next couple days I would sleep less and less but not feel tired in the morning which was very weird. Finally on 12th day I haven’t sleep like for 3 days in row and didn’t feel tired,it was like being affected by some drug or something. Even tho I was not sleepy next day, I was getting really moody. So after that i stopped taking it and in couple days i was back to normal(like my sleep) but my gut was still better. I stopped taking restore for a while like for couple of months and my gut start feeling bad again, so I started taking it again maybe two months ago but I’m taking it only once a week, one table spoon in between meals. I feel bad like day after take it and get insomnia but than on third day i feel great. Not sure if this reaction is normal but that’s how I feel while taking restore. I gave to my roommate to try who don’t have stomach issues just to test, he was taking it for a 10 days and didn’t feel better or worst he just felt the same. He was taking one table spoon a day in between meals. Hope this will help to someone.

    Thanks

    1. CD says:

Maybe try taking it in divided doses 30 minutes before meals…

They have great dosage suggestions on their website…

  30. TOM MAYES says:

I’ve shown crowds of people what glyphosphate does to horses, and its by far the number one neurotoxin in equine diet.
Equines are perhaps the best species to illuminate toxic substances- I first show an inflammatory organ(s) and prove it 5 ways:
    1- reactive acupoints
2- reactive organ and adjacent tissues
    3- weak surrogate muscle
4- pain reactive surrogate reflex points
5- movement range of motion and specific
    muscle spasms in the horse
Then I clear the organ(s) with visceral manipulation; and prove its non- reactive with the previous (follow up blood tests and neural conductivity measurements verify as well).
THEN, I put a common glyphosphate food ( beet pulp#1, soy, or corn) on the horses and watch which organs and how extensive they react.

  31. David Young says:

I love your work but cringed listening to the fist few seconds of This Zach Bush podcast. You mention two items you may want to reconsider ‘Restore’ and Fermented cod liver oil. Restore was a contributing factor of my months long excitotoxin reaction. It has excessive glutamine. Beware. I would never use Restore.

Secondly, the work and integrity of Dr Kaayla Daniel should make you avoid FCLO.

    1. Marko says:

Are you talking about Restore for Life? Because there is no glutamine in that product.

      thanks

      1. I am talking about exactly what I linked to in the show notes above… It is not glutamine. It is something totally different. You should definitely listen to the podcast.
