Bone Broth vs. Eating Bones

Kevin asks: Hi Ben, I like to eat a lot of tendons, cartilage, bone marrow, and whatnot, as I know you like to. But I wonder if that's as effective a way of getting the nutrients as making a bone broth in the pressure cooker for 2~3 hours.

Matt asks: After being introduced to a high fat, low carb, and intermittent fasting diet several years ago, I found it was easy to maintain an ideal body weight. Most of my body is pretty lean (160~170 pounds) but when I measure my stomach using a caliper, it seems to come in around 15%. I've always heard that belly fat is one of the last places men lose fat, but I'd rather not drop to 145 pounds just to see abs. There seems to be a community of people online who think you can spot-reduce fat. Do you think that's possible, and if so, what techniques would you recommend?

Can you give a brief summary of what you would advise for a recovery program for my friend?

    I’m a fan of your work Ben, thanks for all you do.

    However, I’d like to also join others to counter your point of how animal agriculture greenhouse emissions are greater than plants. Also I say this as a grass fed beef eating enthusiast, who doesn’t believe in Veganism. I too believe we can raise animals in a sustainable way.

    Simply ask yourself this: What do cattle and poultry eat?

    Given that the majority of these raised animals are NOT grass fed and pasture raised, they rely heavily on the same plant based agricultural feed you are claiming to have a much larger greenhouse emission impact. But, you need to consider the combined effect of growing the feed which is then fed to these animals. Also, have you also considered the waste that animal agriculture generates and the impact on run off to our drinking water supply? Have you heard about the fires burning in the Brazilian amazon to make way for cattle farms? The net effect of animal agriculture in the world is far more complex than you have described.

    With due respect, can you please use the same voice of reason that you have consistently demonstrated over the years to reconsider your stance?

    Long time listener. Big fan. Meat has to be shipped too, and it sounds like this was completely discounted. Plants can be grown in multilevel hydroponic low energy environments. Animals can’t, at least humanely. So much is wasted in meat consumption in this country. We’re not eating nose to tail and that seems like a stretch as a goal. There’s not much waste on a plant. I’m more of a proponent of eating lesser amounts of high quality meat along with locally grown vegetables when possible; but that’s me. This carnivore diet is great…. For some. And it’s deadly, for some. Everyone is different.

  4. Thanks for the concussion segment Ben. The vast majority of people do very little to accelerate recovery after being “medically cleared”. Two other things I can add. First IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback- Study at UCSD showed 54% reduction in abnormal delta brainwaves after just 12 sessions (documented on MEG brain imaging).     Also I like the fish oil protocol by Dr Michael Lewis author of “When Brains Collide” because it is so simple, effective and accessible to anyone.

    There’s a great interview with Dr. Mark Hyman and Paul Hawken, editor of the book DRAWDOWN. Do away of the monocrop production used to feed cattle and get them back on the grass! Healthier animal, healthier humans (much better meat profile with better Omega-6 to O-3 ratio) and builds soil. According to Hawken, it not only cuts down on emissions with reduction in all that farming activity, it actually increases the DRAW DOWN of CO2. The soil sequesters the CO2 and does this better than the forests.

    Let’s not do away with meat production but change how we produce it and REALLY make an impact. Regenerative and organic farming is a MUST!

    Hi Ben,
    I’m an Osteopath in Montreal, really love your show and get very inspired by your thoughts and advices. Great recommendations for TBI and concussion. I’d like to point out the value of a human therapist and how seeing a good osteo or chiro releasing neck and cranial bones and pericardium is a must for TBI and post concussion. It’s great to encourage the use of machine and the biohacking gear which is always good publicity for the conceptors but a hand-on therapeutic session canno’t be neglected and must be put forward…. at least not until the machine take over in a few decades
    Plus all these devices are very costly and not affordable for everyone. And a couple a session with a therapist would provide so much benefit at a lesser cost…
    Maybe you can add this to your future TBI recommendations!

    Big fan of the pod! I was vegan for 4 years for ethical reasons, but I reintroduced fish recently because my health/performance was suffering.
    I agree that the environmental argument against meat is overblown, and I think climate change will only be stopped by transformative structural change rather than individual consumer choices. I also think that if people are eating healthy, moderate-calorie diets, the production of meat can be sustainable. Especially more sustainable than people whose diets don’t include enough protein, who end up binging on processed foods and putting more of a strain on our environment with excess food intake (not to mention the packaging, transportation emissions, etc that goes along with that).
    I do want to counter your point about plants producing twice as much emissions as meat, though. This may be true, but a huge portion of those plants are grown to feed the animals we farm. And those plants are usually monocultures of corn and soy that are depleting our soil and require huge amounts of pesticides and polluting fertilizers. An ideal plant-based diet would focus on a locally-grown diversity of fruits/vegetable/nuts/grains/legumes and would be much friendlier to our environment than those monocultures. But adding animal protein doesn’t necessarily make it unsustainable as long as we raise our animals better, so I’m not really disagreeing with you either.
    Just some thoughts from an ex-vegan that supports both sides of the coin. At the end of the day, our priority should be our health, and we need to radically transform our over-industrialized food system to see actual change rather than cutting out meat. I mean, the American food system wastes 40% of the food it produces every single year. We need systematic change, not people abusing their digestive tracts with fake meats, to solve climate change.
